tory effects of experimental hypercorticalism.3 The visual effects of ionizing radiation on the blood flow, small blood vessels, and endothelium of capillaries and venules in the hamster cheek pouch have been studied.4 As a basis for the correlation and interpretation of these observations with respect to changes in the usual hematologic values, we have completed a study of the blood of normal and of total body x-irradiated hamsters. Red corpuscle counts, hemoglobin determinations, hematocrits, sedimentation rates, total and differential white cell counts, platelet counts, and clotting time determinations have been made. The hematologic data for the normal hamster are still scattered. For example, only three entries on the hamster are found in Standard Values in Blood, the first fascicle of the Handbook of Biological Data.6 In our laboratory Sherman7 has reviewed the literature and reported original blood determinations on one hundred sixty hamsters as a basis for evaluation of hematologic changes during growth of tumor transplants in the cheek pouch. Our findings reported in this paper for the normal hamster are in agreement with those of Sherman. Rugh8 has described the histopathologic effects of million volt x-rays on the hamster, but we have no knowledge of previous publications on the effect of irradiation on the blood picture.

Protective effects of sulfated derivatives of polysaccharides extracted from Auricularia auricular on hematologic injury induced by radiation
Background: Ionizing radiation induces the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which play an important causative role in cell death. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of sulfated derivatives of neutral polysaccharides extracted from Auricularia auricular (SNAAP). Materials and Methods: Whole blood samples from healthy donors treated with SNAAP at differen...

متن کاملEffects of neonatal ovarian X-irradiation in the Chinese hamster. II. Absence of chromosomal and developmental damages in surviving oocytes irradiated at the pachytene and resting dictyate stages.
Ovaries of Chinese hamsters were irradiated with 1 Gy of X-rays on day 0, 4, 8 and 14 after birth, and the late effects on pachytene and resting dictyate oocytes, which had been proven to be radioresistant and to survive acute oocyte-killing, were studied in the progeny of the irradiated females. Thirty hours after mating, fertilized ova were collected and female pronuclear chromosomes were kar...
متن کاملDown-regulation of topoisomerase I in mammalian cells following ionizing radiation.
Modulators of the DNA unwinding enzyme, topoisomerase I (Topo I), inhibit DNA repair and augment the lethal effects of X-rays and other agents that create breaks in DNA. To investigate the role of Topo I in DNA repair, we examined Topo I activity before and after X-irradiation using confluence-arrested hamster and human cells. Topo I activities were higher in unirradiated neoplastic compared to...
